Over the last few years, Iftest has been able to achieve a sustained increase in efficiency thanks to the systematic introduction of LEAN concepts. On 7 June 2018, alumni of the Higher College of Technology Mittelland (HFTM) came for a tour of the company conducted together with experts from LEANCOM, to learn how this was achieved.

Consistent LEAN philosophy put to the test in real life

On a tour through the serial manufacturing facilities, the Iftest production managers, together with LEANCOM – a Zug-based company specialising in lean management – showed how the LEAN philosophy is applied in day-to-day development and production processes. The technicians, who had completed in-service training at the HFTM in Grenchen and Biel in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, information technology and business processes, were impressed by how comprehensively and consistently Iftest had implemented LEAN methods at all levels and in all stages of production. The visitors were particularly interested in the explanation of how a corresponding culture of improvement had been introduced, made possible only through deeper understanding of the advantages of the concept. This culture of improvement has led to a LEAN spirit that is now noticeable in all departments. The jointly organised company tour typifies the ethos of Iftest: the company promotes networking within the sector and the advancement of future experts in the field. The visit also enabled the LEANCOM specialists, some of whom teach at the HFTM, to provide the former students with an insight into the reality of LEAN outside of the lecture theatre.

Intensive strategic collaboration with LEANCOM

Over the past few years, Iftest has had numerous positive experiences with the continuous introduction of LEAN concepts. LEANCOM provided ongoing consultation during the phased implementation from 2013 to 2016, which now covers all central areas of the company, including development, production, logistics and administration. The LEAN initiative resulted in an increase in productivity and a significant reduction in lead times, which in turn noticeably improved our competitiveness. Alongside other efficiency-increasing initiatives, the systematic application of LEAN concepts has contributed substantially to Iftest’s development into a leading EMS service provider in Switzerland and the German-speaking regions (DACH).
